I remember hearing of how a married couple met at Bible college while they were both The funny thing to me was that they grew up in churches just a few miles apart in the St. Louis area, but never met. In Mississippi a few years ago I met two young Pentecostal widows in their 30s and 40s. One wife lost her husband to a brain tumor and the other lost her husband to an auto accident. Both widows went to separate churches within a twenty or so minute drive of each other, but never met until they were both single. They became best friends and the funny thing is that they could have become best friends years earlier. Pastors and church members should realize that blessings of fellowship are a few miles away.

Ethics and Community Gender and Sexuality Pentecostals, like most other conservative Christians, have very traditional views on both gender and sexuality, taking their cues from particular views of certain biblical passages. Regarding gender, Pentecostals try to mirror what they view as traditional family values. As such, women’s roles in Pentecostalism are tightly conscripted to the home and church.
Nontraditional roles for women, in the professions or as entrepreneurs, are not discouraged, but they are secondary to a woman’s primary role as helpmates to men. Of course this view has its dissenters; women have leadership roles, for example as superintendents in the Foursquare church, and there are prominent women educators in Pentecostal colleges, seminaries, and universities. Male gender roles are also tightly conscripted; men are viewed as leaders, providers, and spiritual heads of the household.
Pentecostal men and women generally have certain assumptions about their respective roles in the home; both understand what is expected of them, and as such, things once considered taboo, such as divorce, are still discouraged. Marriage then is extremely important for shoring up these gender roles. Taking much of their ethos about marriage, and the church’s role in securing good marriages, Pentecostals regularly offer counseling, invite speakers, and hold conferences around the subject of marriage.
Not only is marriage viewed as the most desired outcome of any courtship between men and women, but children are an expectation of any union. Intertwined in this thinking about gender, and particularly gender roles, is the idea that gender is a physical attribute that is God-given. Sexuality is a gift from God to be enjoyed within the confines of marriage, chiefly for the purpose of procreation.
Though such strictures may appear quaint in the contemporary world, great care has been taken to ensure that these same theologically inspired notions do not, like many other traditional mores, become lost in the relativism many Pentecostals believe rules the day. Pentecostal women have a number of conflicting issues to navigate.
Church leaders failed to act when told about Rev. Gary James Harris’ “pedophile nature,” lawyers for a year-old Sunrise boy say in a civil suit filed this month in Broward Circuit Court. Because he is a minor, the teen is not identified. Harris, 45, was charged on Friday with five counts of indecent assault, a felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison, according to prosecutor Stacey Honowitz. Harris is the longtime pastor of United Pentecostal Church in Davie.
For three years, from ages 12 to 15, the boy was “continually touched, fondled, abused, molested and sexually battered” at both the church and the pastor’s home, according to the civil suit.

Christian soteriology The central belief of classical Pentecostalism is that through the death , burial , and resurrection of Jesus Christ , sins can be forgiven and humanity reconciled with God. The fundamental requirement of Pentecostalism is that one be born again. Baptism with the Holy Spirit and speaking in tongues are not generally required, though Pentecostal converts are usually encouraged to seek these experiences.

Though many admire how it energizes its followers, many theologians and ministers are shocked at how much of traditional Christian doctrine many of these denominations and churches either completely ignore, misinterpret, or mangle into ideologies similar to the ancient heresies of the past. Many have called certain tenets of this movement heretical, and explain why.
The article is a bit dated, but much of what it states continues to be practiced in many Assemblies of God and Apostolic Pentecostal churches — and is still relevant today. It was written by Roman Catholics after an interfaith “dialogue” the RCC created to learn more about differing Christian faiths. Includes historical tidbits about small isolated occurrences of “tongues” during the early 19th Century. Complete with excerpts from early 20th Century commentators on the then-emerging movement.
Quite informative, save a small error mentioning the UPCI. Easy to read, blunt, and occasionally humorous, this series shines light on many Charismatic errors. He shows how “feelings” and “emotions” reign supreme in a movement that often discounts the relevance of the Bible — sometimes overtly. It is written from a “Reformed” point of view. In order to save us, He became man. The Bible, in its original manuscripts, is the inspired word of God, and it reveals the will of God to the human race. The Holy Scriptures are the final authority in matters of faith and truth. The gospel of the kingdom is the message that the church of Jesus Christ has been commissioned to teach. The gospel of the kingdom declares that the days of human government are numbered and that God will soon set up a kingdom that shall never pass away Daniel 2: When the kingdom of God is established, Jesus will reign as King of kings and Lord of lords.
The only salvation available to the human race was purchased by Jesus Christ at Calvary. The work of Calvary consists of His death, burial and resurrection.

In the past two years, we have benefited from some large, one-time sources of revenue, including the lease income on our new headquarters prior to occupancy, the net gain on the sale of our old headquarters, and the donation of the Urshan campus. Moreover, our goal is not merely to increase net assets but to use our assets to promote growth. Thus, in some years our expenditures for designated missions and ministry projects may equal our contributions.

Due to a cascading set of health and healthcare difficulties and ongoing medical issues that our Brother David Lee has been experiencing, Brother Lee had to have the lower portion of his left leg amputated according to my wild guess by looking; starting about 8 inches below the knee. Let’s all pray for Brother Lee for his healing, recovery, and strength. He will be fitted with a prosthetic. He will have to learn to use it and walk with it.
And, Sister Lee is carrying a caring, but burdensome “load. I think it would be so wonderful to shower them with cards, notes, flowers, or some other message of care and compassion, or perhaps a love offering. Brother Lee is at Swedish Hospital.
