Under the Sea, Men Marry Fishes In a society where primogeniture determines the succession of lords and kings, the fertility of both men and women is a huge issue. Noblemen and kings need heirs to secure the future existence of their dynasties but a lack of heirs or too many of them spell trouble for the nobility. Westerosi women even worry over giving birth to daughters only! So long as a woman is attractive and shows physical traits associated with fertility, the men of Westeros willingly put aside their contempt for wildlings and are quite eager to go in for a marriage: He was weary of explaining that Val was no true princess. No matter how often he told them, they never seemed to hear. Such a prize is not easily won.
But I never quite got around to making it a reality. Then years later, while dating a delightful young lady whose family hailed from Naples, I finally attended one such event and was irrevocably smitten with both the girl and the feast. The origins of the tradition are shrouded in the mists of Southern Italian time, though all versions have one theme in common:

Ecosystem Benefits Seagrasses are often called foundation plant species or ecosystem engineers because they modify their environments to create unique habitats. These modifications not only make coastal habitats more suitable for the seagrasses themselves, but also have important effects on other animals and provide ecological functions and a variety of services for humans.
Seagrasses have been used by humans for over 10, years. They’ve been used to fertilize fields, insulate houses, weave furniture, thatch roofs, make bandages, and fill mattresses and even car seats. But it’s what they do in their native habitat that has the biggest benefits for humans and the ocean. Seagrasses support commercial fisheries and biodiversity, clean the surrounding water and help take carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.
Because of these benefits, seagrasses are believed to be the third most valuable ecosystem in the world only preceded by estuaries and wetlands. An Australian Giant Cuttlefish Sepia apama crosses a seagrass bed. Seagrass leaves also absorb nutrients and slow the flow of water, capturing sand, dirt and silt particles. Their roots trap and stabilize the sediment, which not only helps improve water clarity and quality, but also reduces erosion and buffers coastlines against storms.
Seagrasses can further improve water quality by absorbing nutrients in runoff from the land. In nutrient poor regions, the seagrass plants themselves help nutrient cycling by taking up nutrients from the soil and releasing them into the water through their leaves, acting as a nutrient pump.
Plenty of Fish
Sardine run Forage fish often make great migrations between their spawning, feeding and nursery grounds. Schools of a particular stock usually travel in a triangle between these grounds. For example, one stock of herrings have their spawning ground in southern Norway , their feeding ground in Iceland , and their nursery ground in northern Norway. Wide triangular journeys such as these may be important because forage fish, when feeding, cannot distinguish their own offspring.
Turns out the species was first collected in the northern Coral Sea more than years ago during the Voyage of HMS Challenger, the world’s first round the world oceanographic expedition.
Dermochelyidae Distribution and habitat[ edit ] Sea turtles can be found in oceans except for the polar regions. The flatback sea turtle is found solely on the northern coast of Australia. During the first three to five years of life, sea turtles spend most of their time in the pelagic zone floating in seaweed mats.
Green sea turtles in particular are often found in Sargassum mats, in which they find shelter and food. Sea turtles are able to grow so large because of the immense size of their habitat: The reason that sea turtles are much bigger than land tortoises and freshwater turtles is directly correlated with the vastness of the ocean, and the fact that they travel such far distances, especially the leatherback sea turtles.
A Holiday Tradition with Global Flavors Family takes many forms and can be flexible and expansive, especially during the holidays. This time of year brings people together, sometimes in unexpected ways, creating lasting relationships over platters of food, glasses of wine and pints of beer. I joined about two dozen people that night for a marathon dinner we would not soon forget. This dinner has become one of my favorite food experiences for the last twenty years.
The Feast of the Seven Fishes Festa dei sette pesci , has its origins in southern Italy and the Roman Catholic tradition of eating seafood as a form of abstinence on the vigil of a holy holiday. The Christmas Eve tradition commemorates the Vigilia de Natale, the vigil of the midnight birth of Jesus.
Fish belonging to the genus Cyclothone are believed to be, by number, the most common fish in oceans around the world. Despite their diminutive size of around to 3 inches in length, members of this genus are believed to outweigh any other type of fish in terms of biomass.

The victim was good faith—the use of argument based on scientific evidence to articulate legitimate positions. The villain is US foreign policy, specifically its fisheries branch. It is fascinating, although it does demonstrate how ignorant we are of the strange origins of what is still a controversial concept. Here Carmel Finley applies both of these skills in abundance, focusing them on the great salmon and tuna fisheries of the North Pacific, and particularly the events surrounding the negotiations of the post—World War II peace treaty between Japan and the United States and the trilateral International Convention for the North Pacific Fisheries.
She demonstrates how the ideas of the time percolated the conference on the Law of the Sea and, eventually, came to reside in the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. As a true historian, Finley also reaches back to the origins of the concepts of fisheries science in the research and politics of the s in Europe and North America, and relates the personalities of the major players with the institutional and political framework within which they were operating.
A tour de force indeed.
List of Fish Species — Fish Photos
Tuesday, November 06, It’s a term that everyone is familiar with but not everyone has come to terms with. We usually turn our heads towards our phone and stare at the screen – swiping right and then left, then right once more.
Here, we provide an overview on the wild mammals, birds, fishes, amphibians and molluscs found in coastal sites dating from to B.C. and B.C. to A.D. Coastal people used a variety of animal species for food and other purposes.
Myers Editor Charles H. Original pagination indicated within double brackets. My thanks to the journal Copeia for permitting this reprinting. Instead, secondary freshwater fishes evolved in this area during the Neogene and perhaps for a longer period, the Poeciliidae having probably had a longer history within the area than the Cichlidae. It follows that the rich South American primary freshwater fish fauna could not have been originally derived from or through Central or North America, and continental drift not here discussed in detail is suggested to explain South American-African similarities.
My purpose in this paper is to outline, in a very general way, what the present distribution and character of the freshwater fishes of Central America south of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec appear to demonstrate in regard to their geographical derivation as they evolved and dispersed. It is common in studies of this kind to examine the geological evidence in some detail and to attempt to correlate the paleogeographical findings of geologists with the present distributional picture of the organisms concerned.
So far as possible, I have not done so.
A lobster cruise: The luckiest catch in Maine
Boulenger Editor Charles H. The source describes this as a “slightly abridged” version of an address given as President of Section D, Zoology, at the British Association for the Advancement of Science meetings. Original pagination indicated within double brackets. The subject of the Address which it is the custom to deliver on such an occasion was therefore not difficult to choose–a general survey of the African fresh-water fishes from the point of view of their distribution.
It has repeatedly been pointed out that no division of the world can answer for all groups of animals, differences due to the period at which they appeared and to their ability or inability to spread over obstacles, whether of land or water, precluding any attempt to make their present distribution fit into the frames of the general zoogeographer. The great divisions of the earth, as outlined by our eminent Vice-President, Dr.
This prevents the growth of more ice crystals. Studies have found that Antarctic and Arctic fishes have independently evolved the same mechanism for dealing with the cold — as have cold-adapted.
It is in the same order Ophidiiformes as cusk eels, but belongs to a distinct family Aphyonidae. According to the experts, this is the first time that a fish in the family Aphyonidae has ever been seen alive. Seen while exploring a ridge feature at a depth of around 8, feet 2, metres , the fish measured about 0. Pressure is more than 1, times that on the surface, and the water temperature is just above freezing. No sunlight penetrates the deepest ocean trenches, making photosynthesis impossible.
Organisms that live in ocean trenches have evolved with unusual adaptations to thrive in these cold, dark canyons. In general, life in dark ocean trenches is isolated and slow-moving. In December a new record was set for the deepest fish ever seen in the world, at an incredible depth of 26, ft 8, metres. The snailfish was found at the bottom of the Mariana Trench, and broke the previous record by almost 1, ft metres.
The sighting was not only exciting because it was the first time the fish has been seen alive, but also because it provides the first evidence this family of fish is a bottom-feeding family, the researchers said. This means the animal feeds on or near the bottom of a body of water. Whether or not this family is bottom-feeding has been a source of argument in past. The Neverending Story was a German fantasy novel by Michael Ende that was first published in , then subsequently made into several films.
Some viewers noted it seemed like a fish version of the ghost octopus seen during an expedition this February.
Why Do People Always Say ” theres plenty of fish in the sea”?
History of seafood Various foods depicted in an Egyptian burial chamber, including fish, c. The harvesting, processing, and consuming of seafoods are ancient practices with archaeological evidence dating back well into the Paleolithic. During this period, most people lived a hunter-gatherer lifestyle and were, of necessity, constantly on the move. However, where there are early examples of permanent settlements though not necessarily permanently occupied such as those at Lepenski Vir , they are almost always associated with fishing as a major source of food.
The ancient river Nile was full of fish; fresh and dried fish were a staple food for much of the population.

Lamprey Steve Smith The lamprey are a group of jawless fishes in the family Petromyzontidae. They are eel-like fishes that lack scales, jaws, paired fins, and bone. There are 38 known species, 19 of which are found in fresh water. All of the lampreys have an interesting life cycle that includes a larval phase and adult phase that is parasitic in some species Page and Burr Lampreys are elongated and cylindrical in shape with the adult form having a round oral disc at the anterior end, and flat rounded posterior end.
They have dorsal fins on the posterior half of the body, but have no pelvic or anal fins. Adults have dark colored backs varying by species from a dark gray to brown with a lighter underbelly. They range in size from the small Northern Brook Lamprey at about 15 centimeters to the larger Sea Lamprey that can reach 61 centimeters. Species are identified by the pattern of the teeth on the oral disc.
Image Scientists discover giant m-year-old dinosaur footprints in Scotland0: The discovery has been described as significant because findings from the era are scarce, and scientists hope to use the prints to better understanding the creatures which once roamed the Earth. While the area is well known for evidence of long-necked Brontosauruses and the Tyrannosaurus, the researchers have been unable to identify which type of dinosaur it belongs to.
A million-year old Piranha-like fish has been discovered, capable of ripping the flesh off the bones of its prey, according to a new study. The fish, Piranhamesodon pinnatomus, lived during the late Jurassic period, when sharks and turtles feasted on creatures in the sea using their teeth and dinosaurs roamed the land. However, fish were thought to eat only plankton and crushed shells or swallow their food whole, so the presence of teeth surprised the researchers.
Among the secondary freshwater fishes, which have some tolerance for normal sea water, no such concentration of the majority of the species in the south is noticeable. The more northerly areas are much larger and, as would be expected, have more species.
The luckiest catch in Maine Portland, Maine CNN — Captain Tom Martin turns the handle that draws up the lobster trap sitting on the ocean floor 45 feet below the surface to see what he can see. It’s a guessing game every time: Will it be big enough — but not too big — to keep? Will it be a pregnant female, which he can’t keep? It’s like playing a slot machine — you never know what’s going come up in the trap. His traps are within view of Portland Head Light , a working lighthouse first lit in
